The purpose of integrating the Native Americans into ‘civilized’ Americans lead to education, while stripping the Natives of their culture and heritage. These restrictions lead to poor health as well as malnutrition as the land given to the Natives were generally unfit for farming. ________Event 2: 1877 to 1945Event: _The first authorized investigation into the Native American affairs was requested by the Secretary of the Interior since the 1850s.

The survey team was made up of specialists of various specialties, included Ray A. Brown, Henry Roe Cloud, Edward E. Dale, Emma Duke, Dr.
Herbert Edwards, Fayette A. McKenzie, Mary L. Mark, W. Carson Ryan, Jr.
and William J. Spillman. The Honorable Hubert Work received the 847 page report.____Why: What events or issues contributed to this event happening? By the 1920s it was obvious to the most casual observer that there were major economic, social, and health problems on the reservations.
America’s prosperity was not reaching Indian people. The poverty on the reservations was undeniable to any who had even a causal relationship with them. The Secretary of the Interior thus authorized an economic and social study of Indian conditions._How: How is this event historically significant? Overall, the Meriam Report set the stage for a new era in Indian policy, specifically the Indian Reorganization Act, in an era in which policy could be based on actual data rather than ideological or theological fantasies.
President Hoover asked that additional fund be provided for adequate food and clothing of the school aged children. A reform package was initiated, based on the recommendations within the Meriam Report. The report also made a strong impression with influential effects on the strong criticism of the Dawes Act. This report started the pathway for better opportunities, ability to engage in the culture to which the Native Americans have had to forsake, and social engagement within the white society. The author supports her claims with a theoretical framework and primary sources. This article will help support my own discussion related to life before and after the Meriam Report for the Native Americans. Manifest destiny and racial assumptions are covered in the factor of ideology.
Winlow discusses policies such as the 1887 General Allotment Act for example, as well as other Acts, specifically in the event of passing the American Indian Religious Freedom Act.
