“Will World’s Most Expensive Experiment Destroy the Earth?”The Large Hadron Collider, commonly referred to as the LCH, is the world’s biggest and most powerful particle collider.
Located in the border between France and Switzerland the LCH was first opened 2011 and closed 2013 only to re-open 2016. However the re-opening of LCH has raised serious concerns amongst several scientists and the general public. These critics claim that the LCH may create a black hole during the course particle collision. Furthermore, this black hole would consume the earth and successfully destroy the entire Earth. While this might sound disturbing, it is important to note that the people criticizing the project don’t have valid evidence as to why the particle collision could be the end of earth.The goal of the LHC is to recreate the condition 1 billionth of a second after the Big Bang took place. The Large Hadron Collider can achieve this by colliding high energy protons or ions against each other at monumental speed almost equivalent to the speed of light. By doing so, the hope is that scientists will be able to detect The Higgs Boson, an elementary particle which can help Scientist understand the fundamentals of Mass and potentially discover and change the current physical knowledge.
Furthermore it will prove the prediction that Peter Higgs along with 6 other scientists had made. Even though the Large Hadron Collider already has confirmed the existence of the Higgs Boson, Top quarks are still being investigated in order to detect the effort which causes the mass to go missing. The legal case raises potential problems with the LCH. The biggest one is that when the collider will smash the atoms extreme temperatures of up to one trillion degrees centigrade will be created. As a result this might form a small black hole which according to Professor Otto Rössler, a German chemist at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, might be stable enough to suck the whole earth in within 4 years. The plausibility of this happening is a risk that in itself makes the experiment too dangerous to conduct according to Professor Rössler. He states that the Scientist at CERN aren’t taking necessary precautions to protect human life when conducting these experiments.
However I believe Profesor Rössler complainments are absolutely absurd. First of all Professor Rössler hasn’t acquired any credible proof conveying his ideas. He discusses the consequences and claims that they are dangerous according to “his own calculations”.
The truth is the LHC is an extremely safe machine despite it being the most powerful one on earth. This is because it is supervised by thousands of Scientists around the world and they have all analyzed the safety of the experiment and concluded that there are no major hazards. This is clearly stated in the Safety report published by CERN which also is verified by several external scientists which further proofs that LHC indeed is safe.Another reason as to why we shouldn’t close down the Large Hadron Collider is that it is important and can play a big role in acquiring vital fundamentals of Mass and physics in general. This can be to massive help in the future when humans might need to apply and understand this fundamentals in space exploration.
Besides, over 9 billion dollars have been spent funding the project and building the collider. It would be a shame if we stopped using such an advanced and expensive machinery over some invalid allegations. I believe the fair thing to do is to let the LCH restart so it can continue helping scientists to conduct essential experiments. Closing down the LCH should only be considered if actual risk can be proven by the critics. In that case we should take another look and reconsider the project but as of now it the safety is evident and should be an issue.
