When I began my nursing studies several years ago I only studied in and familiar with traditional classroom. Now as a nursing student, because of my busy schedule, I embraced online learning to pursue my further studies in nursing. Online learning has allowed me to become a lifelong learner in my profession. Nursing informatics allow me to learn more about the advancement in technologies which leads to professional development. First of all, I would like to give a brief picture on nursing informatics.
Nursing informatics (NI) is the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information management and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage, and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. NI supports nurses, consumers, patients, the inter professional healthcare team, and other stakeholders in their decision-making in all roles and settings to achieve desired outcomes. This support is accomplished through the use of information structures, information processes, and information technology. (Retrieved from Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practice, 2nd Edition, ANA 2015). Key to being part of this change is nursing informatics. Achieving success in developing nursing informatics will also require collaboration between hospital executives, nursing leaders, nursing management, nursing staff and nursing schools.
Healthcare organizations can do much to support the evolving role of nursing informatics Encourage hospital executives to ensure all practicing nurses adopt and adhere to all policies and principles of the TIGER Foundation Initiative. Develop nurses’ potential to fulfill emerging informatics management roles by focusing on leadership skills such as communications, strategic and systems thinking, clinical, financial and business operations, and technical skills. Develop and champion leaders with the ability to develop, deploy, re-engineer and integrate clinical Information systems; function as members of strategic management teams; and collaborate on goals and implementation of clinical information systems. Nurses are key leaders to navigate the need for coordinated care and enable better data infrastructure. The role of the nurse leader in informatics will most certainly be integral to the industry’s future .Retrieved from: Advanced health care nursing: http://nursing.advanceweb.

Music, TV, video games, magazines and other media all have a strong influence on how we see the world, an influence that often begins in infancy.
To be engaged and critical media consumers, kids need to develop skills and habits of media literacy. These skills include being able to access media on a basic level, to analyze it in a critical way based on certain key concepts, to evaluate it based on that analysis and, finally, to produce media oneself. This process of learning media literacy skills is media education. Retrieved from, Media literacy fundamentals.
Cyber security, also known as computer security or IT security is the protection of computer systems from the theft or damage to the hardware, software or the information on them, as well as from disruption or misdirection of the services provided. includes controlling physical access to the hardware, as well as protecting against harm that may come via network access, data and code injection and due to malpractice by operators, whether intentional, accidental, or due to them being tricked into deviating from secure procedures.https://www.

Ethical hacking is a term coined by IBM meant to imply a broader category than just penetration testing.
White-hat hackers may also work in teams called “sneakers”, red teams, or tiger teams.Health literacies:Health literacy means using many different skills to get, understand, communicate and use information to make informed decisions about your health and navigate the health care system. For example, you are using health literacy skills when you: follow instructions for taking your medicines , prepare before a test or surgery , act on medical advice and filling out medical forms , understand treatments and medical terms , find and use health information , know where to go to get health services from home or in the community ,ask questions and advocating for yourself or your family member While caring for a patient, nurses use evidence from different sources such as nursing knowledge and nursing experience. Nurses’ approach to care is also influenced by the organizational policy and the jurisdiction where she is working. Nurses learn from teachers, text and other health professionals. In 1997, Millen son found that 85% of health care practices were not scientifically proven.
Both nurses and patients gather information from internet these days. In the digital age, information is a click away and a disease treatment may sound promising but may not be true clinically. Therefore, nursing practice should come from evidence from research.
A study done by Anne Munhall in Nursing, research and the evidence tells that evidence comes from different disciplines such as professional and non-professional life experiences and depends upon how we view the world . Critical appraisal is the process of carefully and systematically assessing the outcome of scientific research (evidence) to judge its trustworthiness, value and relevance in a particular context. Critical appraisal looks at the way a study is conducted and examines factors such as internal validity, generalizability and relevance.
A filter bubble is the intellectual isolation that can occur when websites make use of algorithms to selectively assume the information a user would want to see, and then give information to the user according to this assumption. Websites make these assumptions based on the information related to the user, such as former click behavior, browsing history, search history and location. For that reason, the websites are more likely to present only information that will abide by the user’s past activity.
A filter bubble, therefore, can cause users to get significant less contact with contradicting viewpoints, causing the user to become intellectually isolated.EBP is “the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of the individual patient. It means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research.” (Sackett D, 1996)EBP is the integration of clinical expertise, patient values, and the best research evidence into the decision making process for patient care. Consumer health informatics examines patient information from points of view such as health literacy, consumer knowledge and education. The goal is to empower patients while giving them the knowledge they need to make their own health decisions. https://www.
./consumer-health-informaticsWeb 2.0 is the current state of online technology as it compares to the early days of the Web, characterized by greater user interactivity and collaboration, more pervasive network connectivity and enhanced communication channels. https://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/Web-20-or-Web-2Credible Web sites should be perceived to have high levels of trustworthiness and expertise, according to Fogg, et al. (2001).
Perceptions of both factors can be enhanced if designers:, Ensure the site looks professionally designed Arrange the Web site in a logical way Keep the site is as current as possible Provide an archive of past content (where appropriate) Intermediation involves the “matching” of lenders with savings to borrowers who need money by an agent or third party, such as a bank. If this matching is successful, the lender obtains a positive rate of return, the borrower receives a return for risk taking and entrepreneurship and the banker receives a return for making the successful match. Apo mediation is a term used to describe using a person who facilitates your pursuit of information on the Internet.
You are assisted in getting and understanding the information, but you are not required to go to a gatekeeper to get the information.Communities of practice (COP) involve people interacting with one another, sharing and learning from one another. It may occur anywhere such as workplace, school, home, social media, etc. It’s main aim is to share knowledge and promote learning whereas team’s goal is to complete specific task.
Community of practice members is voluntary, part-time whereas in team, members are selected and work full-time.Doyles Barnes event, Patients’ communities of practice vs. team. All these discussion helped us be learn about social media policies, be sensitive about patient’s privacy and confidentiality, and to maintain ethical practice even on social media post.
We also discussed about patients’ communities of practice vs. team, advantages and disadvantages of team care for patient. Even though social media may have negative effects such as breach in privacy and confidentiality, mistrust in health care professionals, loss of job/career, etc., it has also positive aspect if used properly. Social media can be a great platform for patients and health professionals to discuss on health topics which may provide emotional support, sense of connectivity/belonging, learning ground, provides a sense of community, medium to enhance organization and planning, etc. In the summary, social media policy and course should be mandatory in nursing school and practice setting; nurse should have strong knowledge of law, CNO social media policies, organizational policy on social media use, ethical practice standards, and be accountable for unprofessional social media post.Nurses have an ethical responsibility to safeguard information obtained in the context of the nurse-client relationship. When clients entrust their health care and health information to a nurse, they expect and rely on it being kept confidential.
Privacy and confidentiality CNO standard created to educate nurses and other stakeholders about the serious legal responsibility of protecting personal health information. The College’s Therapeutic Nurse-Client Relationship, Revised 2006, and practice standard describes the expectations for all nurses in establishing, maintaining and terminating a therapeutic relationship. Identify the five components of the nurse-client relationship. Describe how nurses maintain boundaries within the nurse-client relationship. Identify strategies that protect clients from abuse. Employers are responsible for providing necessary systems and supports to meet legislated requirements for the collection, use and disclosure of personal and health information.
With EHRs comes the opportunity for patients to receive improved coordinated care from providers and easier access to their health information. It’s a way to make it easier for everyone to be better informed and more involved in the patient’s health care. HIPAA– (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) accountable for the privacy and security of patient’s health information. The system utilizes software that embeds medication information in to barcodes so nurses can be better informed to administer correct dose of medication and help to prevent the mistakes. All nurses are on the front line of patient care and while they are not only responsible for seeing that each individual receives a greater possible treatment, they are expected to handle number of other responsibilities as well. Today nursing informatics uses technology to improve its clinical nursing practice as well as to enhance the quality of patient care (Saba,2001).Nursing is one of the most challenging and exhausting professions both physically and emotionally.
Advances in technology in nursing are helping to make life easier for nurses. It is good to remember that, in our high tech world, the human touch cannot be substituted. Nursing is about combining the art of caring with the science of health care.References:HIMSS Nursing informatics awareness task Force. (2007, March).
