What is the Internet? The Internet is a means of connecting a computer to any other computer anywhere in the world via routers and servers. The internet grew out of the Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Wide Area Network established by the US Department of Defense in the 1960s for collaboration with the military among business and government laboratories. The internet has made life a lot easier by making information more accessible to everyone. The positive effects I chose to write are: communication, education.
Communication to anywhere in the world has been made possible with the internet. I remember my parents telling us stories on how their parents and great-grandparents would communicate. I believe the way we communicate today is taken for granted.
Today’s generation don’t even know how our forefathers communicated with their love ones. I remember as a child, that first we would write a letter, drive to the post office to be mailed, and then wait about 3 to 4 weeks for a response. Nowadays, communication is just a click away. Social network (like Facebook) is an example on how social media is a major influence on the way people communicate.
It allows individuals to communicate and link with other people, not only around the world, but with family and friends they may have lost contact with.The internet has also had a strong influence on education. There is Open University, which allows those who could not go on campus and take traditional classroom setting courses. Many community colleges and universities also offer many online courses making it more flexible for parents who also have full-time jobs. The way kids are taught today is not the same as when I was growing up. I remember, in order to write a research paper, I would have to walk to the library and spend numerous hours in research. Now, all you need to do is open a laptop.The Web has unlocked the keys to a worldwide virtual school, potentially leveling the playing field for students around the world However, it is very obvious that the Internet provides not only social connection and entertainment, but also academic and scientific information as well.
Additionally, the Internet can be used as a tool to learn the latest news all around the world as well as getting any kind of information that serves different purposes such as learning more information about a hobby or health. Therefore, it can be said that the Internet is the source of spreading information quickly to a large audience and of going beyond the limitation of time and space. In the light of the above information, it is vitally important to encourage students to use this invaluable source to get any kind of information they need in their academic studies.
