What I like the most about Laura Hillenbrand’s writing style is the way she is able to use short, yet effectively descriptive, sentences to narrate the story. I chose this part of the book because it’s a great example of the imagery she incorporates in her works. It amazed me how Unbreakable is a non-fiction book since I’m not the biggest fan of History. I was able to live the journey along with the protagonist, understand what he went through. Throughout the novel, Unbreakable, she was able to incorporate never giving up and finding a way to keep striving forward as the theme and enforced it by inserting literary devices such as irony, foreshadowing, and flashbacks. Hillenbrand also uses a distinctive structure of elements to express how Louie Zamperini, the protagonist, fights his way through the struggles of getting what you strive for. Examples of this would be fulfilling a dream of becoming one of the best runners in the world or staying alive in the middle of the ocean on a raft.

In the novel, the author’s tone is able to enhance the subject matter by adding triumph and tension to the story. Zamperini started off miserable and incapable of making a successful transition from his his drinking and verbal abuse from his wife, that soon led to a divorce. Yet, his core values and beliefs were able to give him hope for a peaceful and happy life. Unbroken was an powerful story that inspired me as I read it. I was enthralled by the story and it made me reflect in my own life. It is definitely a story remember and will often think about when I am challenged.
