Two years ago, three weeks before I started my last year of nursing school, my significant other of four years passed away. It was a very challenging time for me. I was advised to take time off but I chose to push through not only because I knew he would’ve wanted me to but also because I had the determination to finish my last year of nursing school.

Despite all the grief and sadness, I was determined to stay levelheaded and goal -driven. I channeled my sadness elsewhere by applying for a nurse externship at Grady which has made a very positive impact in my life and my love for nursing even stronger. It was comforting being a shoulder to lean on for the patients and family members despite what I was going through. It was a heartwarming experience to be able to take care of individuals during such vulnerable times in their lives and I was truly able to sympathize and make a connection with the patients and family members I encountered. Even with such a difficult obstacle to overcome, I was able to persevere. In the spring of 2017, I was honored for outstanding clinical practice from my University and graduated with Summa Cum Laude honors. I know there is nothing I can’t achieve if I put my mind to it and no unforeseen circumstance or situation can set me back from achieving the goals I have set for myself. With my drive and determination to become a nurse anesthetist, I see the sky as the limit to how far I can go.
