This final project was written in 2007 by Royanti, student of English Department of Languages and Arts, Semarang State University to get the degree of Sarjana Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. It was about the influence of using English comics towards students’ ability in story retelling. She wanted to know whether there is any significant difference in the improvement students’ mastery in story retelling using comics and without using comics, and identfy the effectiveness of English Comics as a medium in teaching story retelling.
In this project, the writer gave pretest and posttest equivalent group design to the 40 participants, who were in eight grade of SMPN 1 Bojong Pekalongan, to get the data. After the data had collected, the writer conducted an experimental study using t-test. All the participants were grouped into two groups. The first one was experimental group that would use English comics as a medium in learning. And the second one was control group that would use text story. I think this final project is interesting because the writer has found her idea and be able to explore it clearly.
She also used diction which was understandable so that the beginner reader would be easier to understand. In addition, this final project succeeded in proving that English comics is the effective medium in teaching story retelling. The data showed that t value was higher than the critical value of t (4.616>2.02), which meant there was significant difference in the achievement between students who were taught using comics and students who were taught without comics. However, I found some words were written wrongly. It would be more perfect if the writer could be a little more careful in writing words.
