There are eleven main techniques used by dictators, these are, cult of leader, censorship, fear, and force, propaganda, the direction of popular discontent, indoctrination, no guaranteed civil liberties, controlled participation, controlled courts, elimination of opposition and scapegoating. In the movie, “V for Vendetta”, Chancellor Adam Sutler; the dictator of Britain exercises his power over his country by using some of these techniques. The most techniques that are used by Adam chancellor in the movie are propaganda, censorship and no assured civil liberties, fear and force. The government uses fear and force in the movie by intimidation. For example, at the beginning of the film, a woman gets attacked by the secret police because she missed her curfew. Another example of fear and force would be when Gordon made a joke about the government during his show and later in the movie Gordon gets persecuted by the government. Censorship is limiting the amount of information that is displayed on the media. In the movie v for vendetta all the newspaper, media were all controlled by the government. So people didn’t know what was going on the country. For Example, when the parliament building was attacked by V they said it was a demolition it was done on purpose. No guaranteed civil liberties are taking away people’s rights. In the movie, all people must practice Christian religion only.
