The Mayflower compact was the first document to establish self-government in the New World. It created in 1620 by Pilgrims who travel into the New World seek for settlement and the religious freedom faraway from Church of England. Their destination supposed to be Virginia instead they end up in Massachusetts. So, to survived they must create their own self-government to maintain the peace among others.
The Mayflower compact was a social contract in the form of a sacred covenant sworn before God. It was a short document which established that, the colonists would remain loyal subjects to King James, despite their need for self-governance, the colonists would live in accordance with the Christian faith, the colonists would create one society and work together to further it, the colonists would create and enact “laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions and offices…” for the good of the colony, and abide by those laws. And the result of the compact is very well It remained active for seventy years from 1620 to 1691 when Plymouth Colony became part of Massachusetts Bay Colony.
