Tess of the D’urbervills received mixed reviews when it first appeared, because of it’s over exposure to sexuality. It also challeneged the sexual morals of late Victorian.

Tess is the daughter of a poor man John Durbeyfield. Tess is the main character in the novel ,and the whole story revolves around her.Tess face many misfortunes throughout the novel.

We see her unending struggles against the social circumstances.For naturalistic writers, since human beings are, in Emile Zola’s phrase, “human beasts,” . Naturalism is all about being shackled by circumstance. And that is what we see in the life of Tess.According to naturalist theory we will see the socail environment and natural instincts in Tess of the D’urbervilles , not as shown by Thoams Hardy that Tess was helpless but she rather surrendered to the circumstances, she should have been careful as Alec made many attempts to seduce her.
