Supervision is a process whereby a manager or supervisor oversees, support and develops the knowledge and skills of a supervisee. It is the way in which a manager can enable a worker to carry out their role in an effective way. Supervision need to be ongoing to be as effective as possible and gives the opportunity to reflect on the development of the staff member. It allows us to reflect and consider outside training for extra support and guidance and the opportunity to refresh skills. It also helps to build relationships with the staff members and improve their quality of work and to give support.
The purpose is to improve the quality of work to achieve agreed objectives and outcomes. In social care this should optimise the capacity of people who use (National Occupational Standard on supervision developed by skills for care and development). Effective and professional supervision is key to achieve organisational aims and objectives through maintaining a motivated, qualified, competent and confident work force. Supervision also ensures that staff themselves feel supported in their work and have recourse to a system of help should the require it.
The principles of supervision:
-Clinical supervision supports practice, enabling staff to maintain and improve standards of care.
-supervision is a practice focused professional relationship, involving a practitioner reflecting on practice guided by a skilled supervisor.
-evaluation of clinical supervision is needed to assess how it influences care and practice standards. Evaluation systems should be determined locally.
