SEL can be defined as:
SEL is defined as “…the process through which children…acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions” (CASEL, 2017a).
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. ” (CASEL, 2017a ). SEL is thus relevant with respect to individuals’ social and emotional development, but also to the social and emotional climate of classrooms and schools (Oberle et al. 2016 ; Vadeboncoeur and Collie 2013 ). SEL also encompasses the promotion of positive classroom and school cultures that are safe, caring, and encourage participation (Humphrey 2013 ; Weissberg et al. 2015 ) Social and emotional learning (SEL) involves instructional approaches that endeavour to foster individuals’ social and emotional competence (Collie ,2017) .
The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL, 2015) has outlined five social and emotional competencies(SECs) as follows: Self-awareness; Self-management; Social awareness; Relationship skills and; Responsible decision-making for promotes intrapersonal, interpersonal, and cognitive competence . SECs address a range of social and emotional capacities that are essential for healthy individual development, as well as creating healthy classroom and school climates(Frydenberg,,2017) .
SEL enhances students’ capacity to integrate skills, attitudes, and behaviors to deal effectively and ethically with daily tasks and challenges. CASEL, 2017a ). Several conceptual frameworks of SEL have begun to provide important for promotion of SEL, SEC, and student outcomes. Jennings and Greenberg (2009) highlight the role that teachers play in promoting effective SEL implementation and creating safe and supportive classroom environments that are essential for students’ SEC and academic development (see also Collie 2017). Weissberg et al.’s (2015) present an updated framework SEL in educational settings. that highlights considers the various systematic influences on SEL implementation and outcomes—including at classroom, school, family, community, district/region, state, and national levels. Weissberg et al. 2015 )
