Living together is important especially in providing emotional support to each other. There is also freedom for individuals cohabiting together in their social lives (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Field, 2015). Individual cohabiting together also receive and share the same love and care as married couples do. This is important on emotional well-being of the individuals (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Field, 2015). Cohabiting individuals may sometimes face abuse from their partners, which may have negative effects to the individuals involved (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Field, 2015).
Since the relationship has not yet been solemnized into a marriage, individuals may not be fully committed to serving the needs of their partners, which leaves individuals having unsatisfied needs. This can lead to the relationship collapsing and ending before marriage, which can result in depression (Cavanaugh & Blanchard-Field, 2015). Cohabitation can be a good platform to understand each other before marriage (Harper & Dobbs, 2018). This relationship can be improved if both partners have the same views and reasons on the relationship. This will help in understanding and satisfying the other partner’s needs (Harper ; Dobbs, 2018). Individuals may also improve the relationship by considering the relationship as a step towards marriage rather not as an experiment, which will help the members to stay committed to the relationship and put more efforts to improve the relationship (Harper ; Dobbs, 2018).
Individuals who have chosen a cohabiting relationship often feel the need to further the relationship to the next level (Cavanaugh ; Blanchard-Field, 2015). If partners encounter challenges in their relationship, they can seek counseling services from professionals to get a new direction on their relationship (Cavanaugh ; Blanchard-Field, 2015). Child going to College This process builds and enhances the growth of the child in different perspectives, which include emotionally, socially, and intellectually. This helps the child to develop their skills on handling most of life situations they face independently (Whitbourne, 2016). A child going to college places a distance between the parents and the child. This distance may negatively affect the close relationship, which children share with their parents (Whitbourne, 2016).
A close relationship enhances the trust level between the children and the parents, which is important in addressing emotional issues. Children may feel alone with no one to help them in addressing their emotional issues faced in school (Whitbourne, 2016). This relationship can be improved through increased contact between parents and the children in school (Harper ; Dobbs, 2018). This can be achieved by improved communication between the parents and children, which will help parents, understand and address any issues faced by the children.
Constant communication is important in any relationship (Harper ; Dobbs, 2018). Children can be supported as they face the new transition in their lives (Harper ; Dobbs, 2018). Counseling can help parents to understand and adapt to the new changes their children are undergoing (Harper ; Dobbs, 2018). Parents can support their children but also let their children go through learning which will help the children to develop skills to address life issues independently (Harper ; Dobbs, 2018).
Single Parent Single parenting enhances the bond between the child and the parent (Schaie et al., 2016). This bond is important in enhancing trust between the child and the parent, which plays an important role in the emotional development of the child (Schaie et al., 2016). This also helps the children to learn on being independent emotionally and mature due to the responsibility expectations from the parent (Schaie et al., 2016). Low-esteem issues can affect children, which may be due to lack of affection, which comes from both parents (Schaie et al., 2016).
The children may also face loneliness, which may lead to depression and anxiety. This is because there is no one to share their emotions with especially if their parent is busy fending for the family (Schaie et al., 2016). Single parents can improve their relationship with their children by spending more time with them, which will improve trust and communication between the child and the parent (Schaie et al., 2016). Open communication will help the parent understand what their child might be going through and implement strategies to address any arising issues (Schaie et al., 2016). Single parents should take care of themselves, as a negative effect will also affect the child as well (Schaie et al.
, 2016). The parent should learn how to control and address any negative emotions, which might affect him/her (Schaie et al., 2016). An open communication will also help the parent and the child to share their feelings and address any arising form of conflict, which may affect the relationship (Schaie et al.
, 2016).Marriage Marriage has many benefits on both partners in terms of mental, social, and emotional support (Cavanaugh ; Blanchard-Field, 2015). Married couples live together and address any issues faced in life together. This is important as each partner has the surety of support from the other partner, which is important in addressing emotional and psychological matters, which require support from a close individual (Cavanaugh ; Blanchard-Field, 2015).
Due to the different perspectives of individuals, marriages may face negative effects on both of the partners. This may affect the self-esteem of individuals and stress which may negatively affect their emotional well-being (Cavanaugh ; Blanchard-Field, 2015). If one partner has emotional problems, it may affect the other partner affecting the relationship. An individual in a marriage may also face emotional abuse from the other partner if a marriage faces challenges (Cavanaugh ; Blanchard-Field, 2015). Improved communication can be useful in improving this relationship (Cavanaugh ; Blanchard-Field, 2015).
Lack of communication has been attributed as the number one cause of collapsed marriages (Cavanaugh ; Blanchard-Field, 2015). Partners should be able to communicate and share any issues facing the marriage, which will enable the participation of both partners in providing solutions to address these issues (Cavanaugh ; Blanchard-Field, 2015). Couples having issues and in need of direction can attend marriage counseling sessions to get information and advice on how to handle any issues that may cause their union to stumble (Cavanaugh ; Blanchard-Field, 2015). Marriage counselors are professionals who have information and experience on how to address any issues that may arise in a marriage (Cavanaugh ; Blanchard-Field, 2015).
Divorce With Children Divorce is often an end to a marriage due to unresolved issues, which may have negative emotional as well as physical effects on either of the partners (Whitbourne, 2016). Divorce sets one free from the responsibilities of the marriage and individuals can now concentrate on their well-being, which can lead to improved well-being physically as well as emotionally (Whitbourne, 2016). Divorce with children can have negative effects on both partners and their children too (Harper ; Dobbs, 2018). There are different negative aspects, which are associated with divorce, which include anger, guilt, and grief, which may affect the individuals, previously married (Harper ; Dobbs, 2018).
The process of divorce is also a complex process with the division of responsibilities to the children, which might be challenging for either parent as responsibilities had been previously, shared which was easy for both parents. This can lead to depression on the partners and the children as well (Harper ; Dobbs, 2018). Couples who are undergoing a divorce may seek professional help to help them in co-parenting and solving any issues relating to the divorce peacefully and maturely (Harper ; Dobbs, 2018). Parents should maintain a healthy relationship with their children as a divorce might also affect how parents relate with their children (Harper ; Dobbs, 2018). Individuals undergoing a divorce can seek professional help in their actions as these actions may worsen the process in terms of emotional and financial aspects of either partner (Whitbourne, 2016). Seeking support from close members is also helpful as the process of divorce is a painful process, which may result in couples taking dangerous steps (Whitbourne, 2016). Actions, which increase the level of stress, should be avoided and individuals should engage in activities, which help in reducing stress.
Engaging a psychologist can help in giving guidance on how to handle one’s emotions (Whitbourne, 2016).Now choose two more relationships from the list below, place both of them in the chart, and complete each heading.MarriageCaring for an aging parentGrandparentingRemaining SingleAdopting a childFostering a childSibling conflictTwo working parentsMarital conflictDivorce with no childrenDivorce with childrenRemarriage with children (blended family)References:Cavanaugh, J.
