Power of Education
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” said by Nelson Mandela. This theme is explored in the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell. Animal Farm is told in third person by an all-knowing narrator. It is about the oldest pig on the farm, Old Major, calls for a clandestine meeting of all animals. He shares with them his dreams about a revolution against Mr. Jones, the farm owner. When Old Major dies, the other animals decide to fulfill his dream and start a rebellion that results in taking control of the farm and creating their own set of commandments. This essay will include who in the novel is educated, who are the uneducated and how are pigs self-serving.
Educated animals have the power to be leaders if they choose. In Animal Farm, Napoleon and pigs have power to lead other animals, because Napoleon was an educated animal. Not only Napoleon, Benjamin also was educated too. Napoleon and pigs let other animals to do all the work and they even do not feed other animal enough food. On page 67, “The mystery of where the milk went to was soon cleared up. It was mixed everyday into the pigs’ mash”. Benjamin was one of the animals that was against by Napoleon. But he was also well educated like Napoleon do, on page 21, “Benjamin could read as well as any pig, but never exercised his faculty”, Benjamin was educated and he also have skills to become a great leader, but he did not, Benjamin already accepted that “change” cannot and will not make things any better than they already are, even if he had the capacity to invoke change. Therefore, the educated animals are different with others.
However, on the other hand, uneducated animals may be involved in dangerous situations. Uneducated animal usually not as smart as educated animal do, so they always follow others order. In Animal Farm, Boxer and sheep are the character who is uneducated and involved into a big dangerous. Boxer and sheep were a follower of Napoleon, who really believed the Napoleon very much. But, at the end, Boxer killed by Napoleon. Napoleon call the glue factory to kill the Boxer. On the page 82, ‘Boxer!’ cried Clover in a terrible voice. ‘Boxer! Get out! Get out quickly! They are taking you to your death!’ Also sheep were uneducated too, because they did not have their own opinions, they do whatever Napoleon said. On page 21, this sentence can prove sheep were one of the uneducated animals, “It was also found that the stupider animals such as the sheep, hens and ducks, were unable to learn the Seven Commandments by heart”. Therefore, the uneducated animals always be one of the tool for leader.
In addition, in Animal Farm the pigs became very self-serving. After Old Major died, pigs suddenly moved into the farmhouse and took up their residence. Even the people who get enough power, they will use their power to get benefit. On the page 67, it can tell us pigs use their power to get benefit, “The mystery of where the milk went to was soon cleared up. It was mixed everyday into the pigs’ mash”. And also on page 89, ‘Four legs good, two legs better’, can show us pigs are becoming more human. By the end, there is little difference between pig and person and it is “impossible to say which is which” (Chapter 10). Therefore, we should not do anything that is illegal for getting benefit using power.
In conclusion, education can be a most powerful weapon in this society. And it proved in the Animal Farm novel, Napoleon was an educated animal, who was different with others uneducated animals and he leaded the rest of the uneducated animals to use by his tools and also for their self-serving. Therefore, is an education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world?
