Persuasive Research Essay According to the FBI crime clock a violent crime occurs every 25.3 seconds in America. Crime is one of the biggest problems here in the U.
S. Every criminal needs to be punished no matter how sever the crime to show criminals that havent been caught yet and younger people who will become criminals that we will not tolerate any form of this behavior. To take this to the next step we need to put in place the death penalty in Wisconsin because it will deter further crime from happening, it will bring down our budget for keeping these criminals alive and wasting our resources on people who have thrown their lives away and don’t regret it, lastly it will give the victims families the retribution and justice they deserve. The Deterrence of crime is a major part of why the death penalty should be in place here in Wisconsin.
A professor from Fordham University Ernest Van Den Haag who has studied the question of deterrence closely had written: “Even though statistical demonstrations are not conclusive, and perhaps cannot be, capital punishment is likely to deter more than other punishments because people fear death more than anything else…” Many other professors and police officers agree that it is a very strong deterrent to criminals that haven’t committed any serious crimes yet and also criminals in prison that may kill guards, other inmates or if they ever escape prison civilians. Another study that CBS did says that “The analyses say yes it does deter crime. They count between three and 18 lives that would be saved by the execution of each convicted killer.
” (Alfano) From this quote I think that many American citizens would agree that saving three to 18 people per execution would be a tremendous step forward in the right direction to stop or at least slow the crimes committed. Criminals would think twice about committing or even attempting a serious crime like murder if they knew that they would be executed after they were captured. Deterrence is not the only reason the death penalty should be carried out and put in place here in Wisconsin, it is also very expensive to keep prisoners alive and feed for the life sentence they would serve before they passed of natural causes.The second reason the death penalty should be in rule here in Wisconsin is because the cost of executing the prisoner and making sure they can never harm anyone ever again outweighs keeping them alive and paying for their shelter food and water.
In 2010 the United States spent 80 billion dollars on supervision, confinement, and rehabilitation for those convicted and accused that is about 260 dollars per citizen and the government only paid for about 10% of that cost. If we did not have to waste so much money on the criminals and the rehabilitation that seems to not be working we could be saving money and putting money back into the economy and helping our country. On average two-thirds of prisoners released from jail or prison were rearrested within three years of release. This statistic shows that our efforts in trying to send prisoners back into the world isn’t working and we are losing a lot of money in the process. California is a prime example of this Joan Petersilia says “California, where I was involved in the corrections system in various capacities under reform-minded governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, pours 10 percent of its massive state budget into correctional facilities. Between 1985 and 2005, it built 21 new prisons — more than one a year.
The state’s prison population surged, and so did costs: The state spent nearly $10 billion on corrections last year, or about $50,000 per prisoner. (The national average is $23,000.” (Petersilia) While it is wrong to put a dollar sign it needs to be done so we can show we mean business and save money. (Concession) Although it is not always about the money the families of the victims need justice and closure for their fallen loved one.
Lastly another reason why we need the death penalty is because the families are scarred and need all the support and closure they can get.
