“No read, no pass.” ECARP or Every Child a Reader Program of DepEd, stated in Deped Order No.43, s. 2002 tends to have a low to zero percent of non- readers to every learning bay. It is strictly imposed by the Education Department for everybody’s compliance. No buts, no excuses.
If a learner can’t read with all the standards primarily set by the department then he’ll either take tutorials or remedial sessions after class or he’ll not receive the “PASSED” mark on his Form 138.Reading is one of the basic skills taught inside every classroom. Its significance is unquestionable as it will be one’s ladder towards grade promotion. Teaching learners to read is not as easy as everybody thought it would be. It is not as easy as teaching and memorizing the ABSCs and 123s. Reading starts in the first grade as students are taught patiently with phonics making them easier to distinguish letter sounds or/and as it combines with other letters in a short sentence.
Sadly, not everyone learns from it, not every child has the ability to grasp reading in a snap. That’s when and where problems arise. As they move to the next level, they will be taught with no basic- phonics anymore, making it very difficult for them to at least syllabicate a word. Remedial sessions are done to help students cope-up with their reading skill difficulties, requiring teachers to give off their extra time before going home.
Also, DepEd instructs every room to have an inviting reading corner to attract students to read together during their idle or spare time. This could probably help in the eagerness of a child to not just held a book in the reading corner, but to actually read it and later on understand it.Assessment of every learner’s reading ability is made possible with a tool that Grade 3- 6 teachers grew familiar with through the years. The main purpose is to determine who among the students can independently prove their reading knacks and who among them needs further and in depth assistance. The assessment tool- Phil IRI is done after few months of school re-opening.
By this time, teachers spend their extra hours to evaluate the reading aptitudes of their new students, one by one. They do it out of passion to help them learn one of the basic skills they ought to be acquainted with in the Elementary Level- both in English and Filipino tracks. The procedure is as bloody as its computation. Every teacher is tasked to print copies of each passages both in English and Filipino to provide for each students.
They will perform the silent and oral reading tests within a given time including the comprehension tests that come with it. From the results, computation will follow and determination of who needs help will finally show up.Phil IRI is such a wonderful tool that is made by brilliant minds, passed to teachers and perform by students; For the students. Its vitality is incontestable as it will be a tool to address the need to solve the magnanimous number of students who have reading difficulties and problems; finding the main root that make it grim and hard up to the conceivable interventions to finally solve the condition. When a student is able to read with comprehension independently, the teacher behind it is far more than blissful for the achievement and triumph. All thanks to Phil IRI and to the persistent teacher behind every photocopy of every reading passage. Kudos!
