Motivation is getting others to do something because of their desires, needs and wants. It is the process which encourages and guides behavior.

Therefore, motivation is an intrinsic desire in a man to archieve the target goal through the performance or activity and cannot be inflicted from outside. Motivation also leads to a goal directed behavior. People bring their certain needs that affect on-the-job performance when they join an organization. Others are related to psychological and social value while some of their needs are physiological. Maslow has invented a hierarchy of needs as follows : physiological, security, social, esteem, and self-actualization needs.

According to a model invented by Herzberg, motivation is impressionable by maintenance and motivational factors. The work itselft, archievement, growth, responsibility, advancement and recognition are the important motivational factors.The Maslow and Herzberg models are most likely each other because both of them focus on needs, but they do so from somewhat different points of view. Motivation therefore, though is a powerful intrinsic urge in an individual can guide the manner and means by which the followers can fullfil their needs satisfactory. When someone is guided by expressed motivation or unconscious motivation and multiplicity of motivational sequences, it is definitely difficult to motivate them.
