It is defined as a complex space that is mainly composed of palpable elements and physical environments that would help one’s productivity. It should help employee to concentrate and lure away distractions. A workplace can be an office space, where employees do their works. It is a place where employees spends their whole time working and it is important to understand the ways how it should be designed in a way that it can provide maximum effectiveness and be conducive in employees efficiency. There are four generations that we are considering in our workplace: Traditionalists (1925 – 1945), Baby Boomers (1946 – 1964), Generation X (1965 – 1981, and Millennials (1982 – 1999).

Millennials are continuing to outnumber the older generations. They are considering as the most influential group in out setting today. These are the times that they are graduating from college level and reaching their peak for getting their own jobs. As millennials continues to dominate the workforce today, they are also carrying the new perception of an office idea looks like and how it can be structured between the employees and employers.

For the millennials engagement and efficiency, their workplace should complement their fondness and preferences.According to PSA (Philippine Statistics Authority) in 2015, there are 62.5% of wage and salary workers –which are professionals, managers and clerical workers from the total employed population. These wage and salary workers or called office workers, are the one who take up a large part in the employment rate population. Also, according to PSA Labor Force Survey, in October 2015, for the age gap of 15 years old and above, there are 42 million in labor force, which 47.1% of it were Millennials (Gwen, 2016).

OVERVIEW (OR BACKGROUND)Born between 1980’s – 2000’s and now are on their 20’s and early age of 30’s, these are what we called millennials. This generation are in the peak years of their career, which means they continue to occupy the, significant part in the workplaces. Not just as employees, but millennials also increases as great leaders. According to Karen Myers and Kamyab Sadaghiani’s published review on millennials in the workplace, older generations or employees valued more of career progression, financial stability and they’re expected to stay longer within the company. In contrast with this, the generation of millennials don’t mind job-hopping to find career growth and according to Deloitte’s 2016 Millennial Survey, 6 out of 10 millenial employees will leave their jobs in the next four years in workplaces.

With these reasons, millennials are also known as entitiled and self-centered.In our workplace, generational difference is unavoidable. It can lead to a negative implication for the whole organization, this is why engaging older generation and especially the millennials through the physical and spatial design is essential nowadays. Proprietor or the employer should be aware of the retention issues and employees engagement in their respective workplaces. Every organization have commitment policies that’s typically address engagement for organizations with one policy, this is to avoid any differentiation between the generations of their employees. Human resources professionals, employers and even managers should consider this generational difference between the two generations –baby boomers and millennials, and develop new engagements for these as millennials grows rapidly in the workforce.-635424053000According to Mary Lee Duff, principal of Interior Architects, “Open plan designs became popular and expanded in every office settings for the last decades. The rise of knowledgeable workers, multigenerational workforce, and evolving technology renders the cube farm an artifact of business culture past.

Traditional office designs, advanced technologies and software don’t allow their employees to stay on the same spot. But due to sudden changes cause by wireless devices office and mobiles, personal desk is the only place where they can work and lost their mobility in the workplaces. Collaboration has become the main solution of most companies, but having one desk per person idea that’s same with the traditional office space losses the mobility in a workplace. More than half of the 66 million are millennials, the rest are of legal working age. Millenials are occupying a significant part of the workforce industry that can also boost the economy. They are the one who has fresh and innovative ideas, achievers, plenty of confidence and trust themselves to solve challenges. (De la Cruz, 2016). Approximately half of the global workforce will consist from the millennial generation by the year 2020.

The millennial generation will soon be engaging with a large role and responsibilities in the global workforce industry. (PwCIL, 2011)With the nature of these problems, architectural designers address to check out different solutions. In our modern world, design problems will have to cope with the multifaceted realities. (Cross, 2012)Architects should provide solutions to boost the relationship of workers and the environment of a workplace in the next few years for the millennial population. The next process is to translate the research data and result for spatial and physical implications upon the development of the building design as soon as the designers understand the broad spectrum problems. (Suh and Hargis, 2016)Highly skilled and well educated millenials are what the workforce in the Philippines needs. One of the advantage of Filipino Millennials to older generations is they can do their work faster with the use of technologies. They were born with the age of technology, and on the early age, they learned to adapt it quickly.

Technology is a great help for millennials in the process of learning in every workplaces. It increases millennials efficiency in their jobs and also the efficiency of their workplaces. According to PwC’s survey, 59% of the millennial participants said that the presence of state-of-the-art technology in their jobs is important for them when considering an occupation. However, they continues to use workplace technology in their own and half of those questioned, habitually make use of their own technology on their job, while 78% of the millennial participants said their access to technology they like to use makes them more efficient in working. To admit this, some employers in the Philippines are complying IT policies to attract Filipino millennials directly. Nowadays, technology is a major factor in the modernity of every workplace, and a huge contributor in every change on workplace design; 64% of companies associate in contributing more mobility support for their employees, according to Cisco. (Cisco, 2012)Baby boomers, born between 1940’s – 1960’s, grew up in a society with huge corporate hierarchies, preferably than flat management structures and collaboration based job roles. In contrary, millennials have different approach.

They have a high expectation with themselves, they prefer to work as a team, desires for rapid advancement and also can do a multitasking –they can focus on their jobs while having a social life and interactions. Working as a team and with the help of technologies, millennials continues to find ways on how their works make easier and faster. The workplace needs to evolve alongside with the rapid evolvement of the technology and millennials. Technology plays an important role in every workplace. It is the main factor on improvement of the millennial and the workplaces especially they are the beneficiaries of it.

research focusThe research study will focus on possible interdisciplinary ways of establishing in spatial means for both physical attributes and social characteristics that adapts to Filipino millennial generation in workplaces and their learning environments. Since in the next few years, most of the workforce especially in the Philippine setting which mostly consists the CBDs (central business district) and BPOs (business process outsourcing), this will lead on focusing to the built environment in the workplace that most of the millennial generation will benefit from it.Traditionalist and baby boomers are slowly dominated by the Gen X and Millennials in the work forces and workplaces as they soon to retire. Few more years to go and these generations will govern the organization. Therefore, millennials will be the main focus of this research study.

The most appropriate workplace designs, considerations, transformations and development and its effects for Filipino millennials or the users.3.1Research problemThe millennials in the workplaces are now entering the employment in huge numbers. In relation, the needs and wants of the users of every workplace also changes as it said that older generations are slowly dominating by the millennials. Traditional office which consists of individual offices, cubes and handful of meeting rooms are contradictory on what millennials finds or demands on their workplaces.

It can lead to millennials to quit their job if a company features didn’t meet their standards. The vast numbers of Filipino millennials in a workplace can also cause several problems, which can be resulted to out of focus, unproductivity and inefficient in their jobs. Last, the existing generation gaps, it will be difficult for millennials to engage with the older generation. In relation to this, instead of millennials being efficient in their work, they tend to be lazy, unproductive and lack of proper communication with each other.3.2Research questionSHow much impact can workplace design attribute to the productivity of Filipino millenials?What are the implications, it can be positive or negative, that workplace designs can affect the millennials?What are the strategies should be used to cultivate and maintain valuable Filipino millennial employees now and for the future?What work practices shall be identified to be patterned and considered for the office design?What are the different spatial needs for the new and more effective workplace design?What design principles, transformations or innovations should be taken into consideration?How can the new design of a workplace engage different generations?3.3Research AIMThis research study aims to improve the quality and develop the traditional workspaces by providing a study on how Filipino millennials work and be productive in workplaces.

It will study the spatial needs of each user, and take into consideration the standards and habits of millennials to be patterned into the design and built structure of workspaces. It aims to recognize the ways to engage develop model considerations with the generational differences between the two generations – baby boomers and millennials.research methodologyResearch DesignThe purpose of this research study is to obtain insights and understanding about the workplace designs in the Philippines and how it can affect in millennial’s productivity and efficiency. In addition, case study will be conducted and utilize the appropriate solutions in designing a millennial – friendly workplaces. 4.1qualitative researchThis research will conduct a case study with the use of articles, journals and texts information, for they will be used in gathering and analyzing the data.

It perform a researched and used it on review of related literature to defend and provide insights to make my research proposal effective and that can lead to potential quantitative research.4.2quantitative researchDescriptive survey method will be used in the quantitative research. It will conduct interviews and surveys on how the employers approach and differentiate millennials from other generations that will help to gather data and other relative information that can use to support the research proposal. Also, it will conduct interviews about Filipino Millennials views for an effective work environment. On the end, it will analyze each data’s about the topic to conclude and identify the spatial needs of the user.

4.3 data collectionThe case study that will be conduct, as well as the data’s and information’s that would be gathered and analyzed will rely from the respondents from the survey, articles and journals by the authorized companies or corporation.4.4DATA ANALYSISSurveys, interviews, articles and related literatures generates the primary data, after analyzing the data’s, it would help in creating the best workplace designs that will be implemented in every company.

Also, it will helps in providing facts and proofs for the proposed study. It will support the development and evaluation of workplace designs for Filipino millennials and may help to future researchers that the workplace designs for Filipino millennials influenced most their spatial needs, productivity and efficiency. Merit of the research and proposed contribution to ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN This research is merely about the importance of workplace designs and layout towards the Filipino millennials efficiency and satisfaction.

This study is significant endeavor in recommending new workplace designs and to be able to provide a more effective workplace. It will benefit the companies with Filipino millennial employees by having new and fresh innovations that will help to upgrade the company’s status. This study will also give an advantage to millennial employees, as well as for them to find fulfillment in their jobs and to be able to function well and do their tasks faster. Again, this study will benefit managers and employers on how they will engage other generations that involve in the workplace together. This study will benefit future researchers, planners and designers on what colour schemes fits on the workplace, what to innovate and what will they integrate in the planning, layout and workplace design. Also, it will serve as a reference for future designers, employers and managers and also for researchers. Flexibility, communication, technology, health and sense of purpose are the important factors for Filipino millennials that will be the considerations in workplace designs.
