Many fear that without animal experimentation medical progress will be put on hold, that we might not have a way to test biological processes and risks to the human body. Fortunately, the increased development of new viable alternatives can be both ethical and equally or more effective. One of these found alternatives are “organ-on-chips” engineered by Harvard’s Wyss Institute. These are human cells grown in an advanced system to mimic the structure and function of human organs and organ systems. “These microchips, called ‘organs-on-chips’, offer a potential alternative to traditional animal testing. Each individual organ-on-chip is composed of a clear flexible polymer about the size of a computer memory stick that contains hollow microfluidic channels lined by living human cells.”( Animal tests are almost considered as a “rule-of-thumb”, but since technology is expanding, we can shift our gear to alternatives instead of using animals. In addition, another method has been found to replace the notorious draize test. The Draize test is a painful irritancy test, in which cosmetics, dishwashing liquid, drain cleaner, and other substances are dropped or injected into the animal’s eyes, but it is very unreliable, producing highly varied results. “It has become practically useless because of the development of a synthetic cellular tissue that closely resembles human skin. Another alternative to this test is a product called Eyetex. This synthetic material turns opaque when a product damages it, closely resembling the way that a real eye reacts to harmful substances.”( Engebretson.)
