Major causes of U.S. Mortality
The major causes of U.S. mortality in the last 100 years include chronic conditions and the lack of equality of health care to all American citizens (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). The birth rate influenced the mortality rate due to the high number of children who lose their lives at birth (Black, 2016). The government has however addressed this issue though improved socioeconomic conditions, which have increased the quality of life and healthcare services to the American citizens (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). With immunizations and other health improvement strategies implemented by the government, children are now able to have an increased health status by preventing fatal illnesses that affect the children due to their weak immune systems (Black, 2016). The lack of healthcare equality has led to discrimination to the low-income populations who are unable to access quality healthcare (DeNisco & Barker, 2016).

The older generations are also at a high risk of developing chronic illnesses due to their weak immune system associated with old age (Pol & Thomas, 2013). Chronic illnesses that may affect the older populations include type 2 diabetes, heart problems, and cancer (Pol & Thomas, 2013). These chronic illnesses are fatal if not properly managed and the government has restructured its healthcare system to accommodate these needs relating to the older generation, which has led to an improvement in the health of the nation (Pol & Thomas, 2013). With government policies, which include mandatory insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act, every citizen is able to have access to quality healthcare including the older populations who are not able to afford insurance coverage (Pol & Thomas, 2013).
Chronic illnesses largely contribute to the mortality rate increase and the government has implemented public health reforms, which include public training and education on life improvement practices, which include good lifestyle choices, which impact the overall health of individuals across the nation (Black, 2016). Through public education, individuals can be responsible for their own health status and this has resulted to improved health status of the American citizens (DeNisco & Barker, 2016). The government has also funded life improvement programs at the state as well as the local levels to improve the quality of life for its citizens (DeNisco & Barker, 2016).
