Fiji gained independence from the British Empire at exactly 10 o’clock on October 10th, 1970, and since then has established a parliamentary democracy.

The first prime minister of independent Fiji, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, received documents from the Queen’s representative, Prince Charles, who provided evidence of Fiji’s independence. The parliament of Fiji has been dominated by native Fijians since its independence in the 70’s, with the tribal leader being Prime minister from 1970 to 1992, and then president from 1993 to 2000. Ethnic tensions between Indian-Fijians and other minorities such as the Chinese and the Banabans, have resulted in a large number of them emigrating from the islands. Described as a middle-income developing country, Fiji is still one of the most developed of all pacific islands.

It’s market economy is almost entirely based on tourism and agriculture. For the first 17 years after its independence, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara and his party dominated political life on the islands. Currently, changing political views in Fiji could trigger the first female president.
