Darsalam AmirTEC English 3rd, HourMarch 20th, 2018Mr. Greenburg LGBT Struggles Throughout the history of America, there have been all sort of groups that has been discriminated somehow, from disabled to women. African American had to fight for their rights to be treated equal through the Civil Rights Movement. Women had to fight for their rights to vote through hunger strikes, marches and protest. Now the LGBT community are struggling to earn the same right as any other person in America. They are being denied the same rights just because they are part of the LGBT community.

The area that people in the LGBT community mostly experience discrimination and harassment is almost in the workforce. I personally think it is wrong for people to be treated unequal just because of who they choose to be.Over the past years of being in school, I have had many friends who are part of the LGBT community, which consist of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. I have watched their friends get along with them each day like another, but to them each day was a day for them to make sure no one knows who they really are. Although the LGBT community had improved over the past 20 years, many of my friends who are part of the LGBT community have trouble deciding whether to come out. Many of them choose not to come out because of the fear of being treated differently.

The main concept that the individuals of the LGBT community fear about coming out and telling everyone about their situation, is the fear of not getting a job, or fear of losing their job if they do happen to have one. Many individuals in the LGBT community arrive at their workplace thinking whether it is their last day as an employed worker. The unequal treatment that the individuals in the LGBT community receives at their workplace has a significant impact on themselves and families, they have higher rates of unemployment, higher rates of poverty and lower rates of access to health insurance and coverage, which to many people is the most important benefit from work employment. Among the few people in the LGBT community who choose to be open about their sexual orientation get turned during job employment despite their qualifications and skills for the job. Whether a person is in the LGBT community or not, I personally do not understand how different they can be.

The person is still the same person except the fact that they choose to be who they want to be. If a person with an excellent talent in computer science is part of the LGBT community does not make him/her any less talented, so I do not get why the people in the LGBT community get fired from their workplace once they choose to be open. Studies from American Progress shows that, “15 percent to 43 percent of people in the LGBT community have experienced some form of discrimination and harassment at the workplace (American progress). With all this happening I think the government/congress should pass a law that makes sure that all people in the workforce are judged based on their talents and the abilities that they have instead of who they are, or who they choose to be.Though there are laws that are out there that state that all people should be treated equal, but those laws are not being put into action. The LGBT community needs laws that could enable them to protect themselves and their loved ones.
