CORE VALUES AT ALIBABA This case study evaluates the core values at Alibaba.Alibaba was established in 1999 by 18 people led by Jack Ma, an English teacher in Hangzhou, China. Jack Ma was started his company from small business.Alibaba had several Internet businesses focused on various e-commerce business models such as Business to-Business ,Consumer to-Consumer and Business to-Consumer. It also had a presence in the intensely competitive web search market.
And now, Alibaba rose and become one of the world’s premier goods trading portal. Alibaba not only the caters to small entrepreneurs in China but also to medium enterprises and multi-national exporters around the world. We believe that every successful company have a set of core values to assist their employees in achieving company goals as well. Company core values are a guide on how the company should run and they are integrated in the company mission. Alibaba have a six core values to create successful company which is customer first, teamwork, embrace of change, integrity, passion and commitment. Firstly, Jack Ma as a founder he put customer as a number one. The interest of our community of buyers and sellers must be our first priority.
He believe if customer happy, shareholders will be happy too and it will make a team happy too so that company keep going smoothly. Alibaba want their customer are satisfied with their products. Other than that, one of the core values is embrace change. In this fast changing world, Alibaba company’s must be flexible, innovative and ready to adapt to new business conditions in order to survive. Alibaba believes that teamwork enables ordinary people can achieve something. Employees should play their roles as a workers and work together as a team. In Alibaba company’s, majority workers are women.
Integrity one of the core values in Alibaba. Jack Ma expect our people to uphold the highest standards of honesty and to deliver on their commitments. As an entrepreneurs everything should be ready. Passion is at the heart of our company. A lot of competitors at the same level with them such as Amazon and e-bay need to compete.
Never give up on doing something and believe that what you do is right. Jack Ma founder of Alibaba person who is determination he realise that he and his staff may not be good if they lose their hope and at the same time will lose their vision. In the business, we need to have commitment by doing something.

Every successful company they have their own core value and have the same mission and vision which is to achieve goal and maintain company in the industry. For example, Alibaba and Huawei company’s they focus on customer as a first priority. They continuously create long-term value for customers by being responsive to their needs and requirements. Huawei also focus on teamwork. By working together,help each others in both good times and bad, it will lay the foundation for successful cross-cultural collaboration, streamlined inter-departmental cooperation and efficient processes.
Without core values in company, everything will not work and company will fail. Clear core values can help an organization hire the right people, dismiss the wrong people and serve stakeholders better. These values embody something that inherently Chinese.It is also one of the most valuable Chinese public companies,ranking among some of the country’s state-owned enterprises. In my opinion, Alibaba organizational cultures more closely associated with their industry. In organizational culture, leaders are important to the creation and communication of their workplace culture. However, the relationship between leadership and culture is not one sided but leaders and staff should be together.
As a founder, Jack Ma must appreciate their role in maintaining and evolving an organizational’s culture. Personally, I really appreciate the organizational culture that Jack Ma created for Alibaba and for his employees. Jack Ma has a managerial roles as a leader, he show a good attitudes to his employees.Similar to Zappos generous and fair treatment to all its employess, all the staff in Alibaba are also treated equally as family members in the big Alibaba family unity.
Employees work in cubicles. I believe that Alibaba’s culture make their employees feel more comfortable to express their personal opinion which result in an engaging workforce environment and gain more innovative ideas. One of the example that reflects Alibaba’s organizational culture is Jack Ma conducting a mass wedding ceremony every May for his employees. This show that, how much leader cares about his employess like his own family.
As a result, employees become more willing and motivated to dedicated themselves to the development of the company. Alibaba’s organizational culture are more similar core values with Huawei or Google.Both are corcern with their customer as a first priority and employees also work hard to make customer happy with their products. This is because to maintain company organizational culture leader should show positive values. Based on question,If I returned to this company,Alibaba in five or so years ,it might be different in organizational culture. Alibaba is an organization that helps small business and empowers innovation. In that way, I will be able to live longer and healthy in this company. There are a lot of problems faced by Alibaba as an online business companies because customers are likely to buy a product in the nearest supermarket, direct to shop compared buy in online.
This is because they are afraid to buy the product through online because the quality of the product is not the same as described and customer afraid that cheated. Changing business practices and changing organizational culture are needed to expand the company. It’s not easy to maintain the company,but with passion and commitnment by employees this company can succeed in the future.Maybe in the future Alibaba organizational culture might be different due to changes of emerging global landscape.
It is good when Alibaba shifted away from the traditional Chinese organizational culture model to a ‘Silicon Valley’.These is because, the company is now ready to expand to the rest of the world.Leader should guides these core values because without it everything does not work. In conclusion,company core values are vital to the overall success of building a business.For most businesses,company culture takes time to develop.Employees are given the most important role in the success of Alibaba.
