These form the Philippines, a mega- diversity country. This place has its own set of unique plant and animal species found nowhere else in the world. We call these animals and plants “endemic”. Luzon, our oldest oceanic island, is about sixty million years old and has the most number of endemic species.
This island may therefore be considered a unique biological treasure in itself.The Philippines is rich in flora and fauna. There is an estimated two million species of plants and animals, many of which are unique to the islands. The term flora is derived from Latin means “Goddess of the Flower”. Flora is a group of plant life found in a particular region. Flora is a symbol of nature and flowers in our country. Here are three examples of flora that won’t make you forget because of its unique beauty.
First is the unique-looking Sea Poison Tree. It is a species of endemic on the islands of the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean like Philippines and Taiwan. It is also known as Fish Poison Tree or Box Fruit due the distinct boxed like shaped fruit it produces.
