Charles Darwin was a naturalist and biologist who discovered the origin of life, “His theory of evolution by natural selection, now the unifying theory of the life sciences, explained where all of the astonishingly diverse kinds of living things came from and how they became exquisitely adapted to their particular environments (http://darwin-online.org.uk/biography.html).” This shows his world significance because he discovered how we evolved and how we had no decent explanation of why the similarities and differences that define such category schemes existed, but with his theory it explains that all land animals evolved from a common ancestor.
Overall, he deserves Person of the Year because, he explained how close our relationship with nature and other living organisms is which is all based on evolution. Giving us a scientific explanation other than god creating it all also known as “Darwinism”. He did not invent the idea, but carried out and did enough research to conclude that evolution occurred, then made the idea acceptable for scientists and the public eye to see. Charles Darwin was expected to go to Edinburgh University in order to become a medical doctor but couldn’t take in the brutality of surgery, soon, losing interest after two years of study.
Clearly, he was interested in biology and geology. By 1831, he had the opportunity to abroad the survey ship H.M.
S Beagle, spending 18 months at sea. After a 5 week long visit in the Galapago Islands, Darwin had made the observation to comprehend what causes plants and animals to evolve. His observation was that species were found in the Galapago Islands in no other part in the world, but similar ones on the west coast of South America. He concluded that “when the original South American finches reached the islands, they dispersed to different environments where they had to adapt to different conditions (https://www2.
palomar.edu/anthro/evolve/evolve_2.htm)” also providing how those who are better adapted have more of a chance to survive and to reproduce and pass on their traits to the next generation. He made major contributions through evolutionary biology; philosophy of science and the modern zeitgeist. Not only that, but from his ideas, we use it in technology called “Ecological Niche Modeling” “to determine the likelihood of an organism surviving in a particular organism.
In the field of paleontology, the idea of evolution has shed light on fossils. Biologist also learned what it means to make a species thrive and how they become extinct through natural selection (https://evolution-institute.org/charles-darwin-the-legacy/)”. Who we should be thanking Charles Darwin for.
