3.3SAY NO TO STRAWS
Of late, there are many issues about environmental pollution in Malaysia especially plastic pollution that still increasing until now. According to a 2015 study, Malaysia is the eighth worst country worldwide for plastic waste. Plastic pollution (n.d.) is the accumulation of plastic products in the environment that affects wildlife and humans. Plastics are inexpensive and durable, and as a result levels of plastic production by humans are high. The purpose of the essay is to help the citizens to understand the importance of reducing the plastic pollution. This assignment is to identify the causes and solutions to reduce plastic pollution.
CAUSES OF PLASTIC POLLUTION
2.1overuse OF PLASTIC
Overuse of plastic is the main cause in plastic pollution in Malaysia. Plastic is cheap and easily to get from everywhere, but citizens of Malaysia frequently disposed of plastic items. Most plastics produced are only used once and discarded due to the ready availability of new plastics. Once the plastics is broken or unable to use, they thrown it away into trash. They hardly decomposed and they released an massive amount of toxins into the air when the citizens burns them. Non compo-stable plastic bags can take up to 1000 years to decompose. This is will pollute the air and harm the health of citizens.
2.2USE OF FISHING NETS
Commercial fishing is an economic necessity in Malaysia. The nets that used for certain operations are usually made of plastic. They spend long times submerged in water and leaking toxins at will. If it get broken up or lost, it will left remain wherever they fall. This will harms the local wildlife and ensures that pollutants enter the water and fish of the area. So when the fish gets harmed, the health of the citizens will also get harmed when they eat the fish.
Everyday trash is one of the biggest contributors to plastic pollution because plastic is everywhere. The toxic pollutants of the plastic end up in the environment or in dumps where they can affect the groundwater and nearby wildlife in the ocean or river. If you’ve ever seen a garbage dump, imagine what happens when it rains or being in your drinking water. The process of making, storing, disposing, and just being around plastics can be extremely harmful to living things.
3.0SOLUTION TO REDUCE PLASTIC POLLUTION
Plastic bags were once a modern convenience but can be efficiently replaced by reusable bags. Just think if a family of four take about five plastics bags at a grocery store, and multiply that by the number of times they go to the grocery store. That’s a lot of plastic! So the best way to reduce the number of plastics bags we used, carry a bag and always reuse plastic bags as much as possible.
As for the use of fishing nets, speak to local businesses about options that they can use another materials to create fishing nets that won’t harm the local wildlife. Many companies are starting to come up with excellent low-cost replacements. Fishing net (n.d.) is net used for fishing. Modern nets are usually made of artificial polyamides like nylon. So other than using fishing nets, we can use fishing rods to fish so that there will be no broken or lost fishing nets left in the ocean.
3.3SAY NO TO STRAWS
One of the easiest ways to keep plastic out of the landfill is to refuse plastic straws. If you eat out everyday, you will find that a plastic straw can be found in every cold drink, which explains why Malaysians have been said to use about 31 million plastic straws daily. According to an article, McDonald’s Malaysia will stop handing out straws starting 1 August 2018. If you can’t giving up the convenience of straws, purchase a reusable stainless steel or glass drinking straw.
To remove the name of Malaysia from the ranking of plastic waste all around the world, the need to understand the causes of plastic pollution which is overuse of plastic, use of fishing nets and everyday trash is very important for citizens of Malaysia so that they will be able to overcome this issue by shop freely, educate business and say no to straws. Although these action have to be carried out by the citizens of Malaysia but they also need the cooperation of the government.
