As can be seen throughout the novel, the importance of leadership, one’s leadership shape the direction of the group. In a group of people, it is seen that there’s perpetually some people who take the leading role. However, throughout history, there’s not always good leaders. What separates and determine the best leader for the group is the qualities one presented. A good leader does not define as being the strongest person in the group, sometime the strongest is not the best choice. Leadership is about keeping everyone in focused on a collective goal, motivate one to do so, and laying groundwork for success. Being that, Ralph is considered the most qualified leader on the island due to his leadership skills with achieving orders, democratic traditions, and labor division.
At the beginning when the boys first landed on the island, a meeting was held by the calling of the conch, Ralph was chosen for the role of a leader among the group. The conch symbolized not only civilization, but democratic tradition as well. Ralph declares that the conch entitles everyone to have a voice in all levels of importance, “I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking” (Golding 33). Ralph represented in the form of government of being a democratic leader with fair rulings. Personal freedom is defined as freedom of the person in going and coming, equality before the courts, and freedom of opinion and its expression. Before decision-making at the meetings, Ralph give the others a chance express and contributes themselves. Ralph offered freedom and equality in ruling, unlike Jack who treated others as inferior comparing to himself. For example, Piggy receive disparate treatment from both leaders; Ralph showed his superior leadership in personal freedom with his constant defendant of Piggy and illustrates understanding through empathizes others.
Under Ralph’s leadership, the boys instilled the sense of order with the meetings. Ralph displayed his leadership skills through his speeches and setting the boundaries around the island.
