Lived Experiences of Selected Junior High School Students with OFW Parents and its Impact to Their Social Skills

Students in Junior High School are entering the adolescent stage. Choudhary, Blakemore, Charman (2006) stated that this age is transitional, a period between late childhood and the dawn of adulthood, and marks the start of the reproductive lifespan in humans. Journal of Family of Adolescent and Family Health (2015) cited that at this period, pubescence as well as the establishment of social independence or autonomy happens.
Every parent wants to only what is the finest and the best for their children. And because of this, they are sacrificing everything to the point where they would go work abroad to seek better opportunities and to escape the poverty. Belonging to a Third World Country, Filipinos were worldly renowned as OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers) who are mostly women, and majority of them came from poor family and has no job.
Lack of jobs and low salary wage here in the Philippines forces the Filipino laborers to work overseas. OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker) is the term used to name all the Filipino workers abroad. Some of the in demand occupations for OFW are Healthcare Providers, Information Technology, Teachers, Engineering, Accountancy and Finance, and Human Resources (Castañeda, 2015).
Higher Income and salary, High Unemployment rate in the Philippines, and Unstable economic condition are the top three reasons of OFW’s (Natividad, 2012). According to Philippine Statistics Authority(PSA, 2018), in April to September of 2017 alone, OFW population were 2.3 million; 93% were OCW (Overseas Contract Worker) and the remaining 3% were Worked Overseas without contracts. Also there are more female OFWs (53.7%) than male OFW (46.3%).
(Kid Sense, 2017)Social skills is defined as the set of skills we utilize to communicate and interact to one another; it could be verbally (through speaking) or non-verbally (through gestures, body language, facial expressions and by our personal appearance (Skills You Need, 2018).
According to Masters in Special Education program guide (2018), there are five types of social skills deficit:
Basic Communication Skills (Includes the ability to listen, follow instructions, and to stop form talking)
Empathy and Rapport (People with certain medical condition may be limited to feel the empathy and connections to others. People opposite of this, some will be overwhelmed by his/her environment and simply shut down others)
Interpersonal Skills (Includes abilities like sharing, joining activities, asking permissions and waiting turns)
Problem Solving Skills (Asking for assistance, apologizing to others, decision makings and accepting the outcomes are included)
Accountability (Some were frightened of being criticize publicly. Some were naturally associate accountability with dependability and maturity)
Choudhary et al. (2006) mentioned that for an adolescent person, social relationships are important especially at this stage of life. They further stressed that at this period, brain regions including the prefrontal, parietal, and superior temporal cortex, undergo noticeable and prolonged change. . Relationship with peers, family and society go through a distinct alters.
According to Estudos de Psicologia (2013) adolescence is a developmental stage in which the social skills play an important role considering the need for social integration and the search for self-assertion and independence. It is therefore a stage of the life cycle where adaptations and changes in personal and social skills need to be made.
Rendeza (2017) stated that adolescents that are left-behind by their OFW parent, as a social being, are greatly affected by their personal experiences with their family. Strengthening their communication with their OFW parent as well as their social life with their friends to fight the loneliness are the things adolescents that have OFW parents do when they miss their parent.
Reyes (2007) mentioned that the children’s behavior could be influenced by migration of either one or both parents. She furthermore explains it by citing that children whose mothers are OFW showed poorer social adjustment and suffered delayed psychological development.
Parental absence due to being an OFW parent has been linked to problems like juvenile delinquency, drug addiction, and dropping out of class among the children of migrant parents (Asis, 2013).
Kasilag (2015) said that utilizing the 10-health related quality of life (HRQoL) dimensions of Kidscreen-52 inIrelands children and adolescents, Keenaghan and Kilroe (2005) found out that both boys’ and girls’ scores are significantly high on social acceptance/bullying and parent relations. It implies then that from children’s view, quality of life is associated with relationships among friends, peers and parents.
This research paper seeks to evaluate the lived experiences of the selected junior high school students with OFW and how this experiences affect the way they socialize.
This study generally aims to determine the lived experiences of selected junior high school students with OFW parents and its impact to their social skills.
Specifically, this aims to:
Identify the Demographic Profile.
Identify the lived experiences of the selected students.
Identify Social Skills
Determine the effects of OFW parents to the social skills of their children.
This study is both a qualitative and quantitative in nature. Qualitative Research is utilized to obtain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It is an exploratory kind of research that provides intuition into a problem or helps to develop ideas or hypothesis for potential quantitative research (DeFranzo, 2011). Quantitative Research is used to quantify the problem by means of generating numerical data or data that can be altered into usable statistics. It is used to quantify attitudes, opinions, behaviors and other defined variables – and generalize results from a larger sample population (DeFranzo, 2011). This research is qualitative in nature as it will gather the thoughts and opinions of students on having OFW parents/guardians. Meanwhile, quantitative research will be used to determine the achievements and/or school participation of a student.
